What Is Torque Calibration?

Accurate torque measurements are critical across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronics, and more. Properly calibrated torque tools ensure the integrity of your products, prevent costly errors, and uphold the safety of the user. Regular calibration not only enhances the performance of your equipment but also helps you maintain compliance with industry regulations and quality standards.

Torque wrench calibration is essential to ensure items that have been tightened to a specified value do not come loose, shear, or become damaged while connecting components. Torque wrenches and drivers are often overlooked when it comes to annual tool torque wrench calibration and driver calibration, as they are mistaken for just being a socket wrench or spanner, but it is essential that these tools are also calibrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a torque analyser?

Torque analysers should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
For confidence that your calibrated torque wrench is still performing correctly, checking against a torque analyser is a quick and simple way to achieve this. Although not as accurate as torque calibrating equipment, a torque analyser does have a higher accuracy than your torque wrench.

Can you calibrate your own torque wrench?

With training using high precision specialised equipment, yes you could. However, without methods, procedures, a controlled environment and quality system, it is unlikely calibrations in this way would be accepted by an auditor.
For confidence that your calibrated torque wrench is still performing correctly, you could check it against a torque analyser. Although not as accurate as torque calibrating equipment, a torque analyser does have a higher accuracy than your torque wrench.

Are digital torque wrenches accurate?

They are as accurate as the manufacturer states, though this should be verified by an approved calibration laboratory. Generally, they are no more accurate than an analogue torque wrench. Being digital, you do tend to get additional functions, and some users may find it easier to set a desired torque using a digital display.
