National Apprenticeship Week 2022 #BuildtheFuture

CTS celebrates #NAW22

This week, the UK is celebrating the National Apprenticeship Week 2022. This year’s theme is ‘Build the Future’.

This annual, week-long celebration of apprenticeships, which is in its 15th year is organised to shine a light on the positive differences that apprenticeships can make to individuals, employers and to the wider economy.

This year’s theme ‘build the future’ reflects on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills.

Apprenticeships offer valuable on-the-job training coupled with additional off-the-job studying, providing an opportunity to gain real-world experience, and earn while you learn.

Construction Testing Solutions (CTS) has a rich history of supporting young individuals in the development of their careers within the construction industry. We launched our first official apprenticeship programme in 2021 with a focus on laboratory technician disciplines. We asked three of our apprentices to share their experiences so far.

As current Laboratory Technician Apprentices, Jacob, Elliot and Ashton’s main responsibilities on site are to help complete whichever materials testing that is required that week and support the laboratory technicians where needed. Furthermore, they all have an allotted weekly home study day where they complete the work required for their apprenticeship, along with researching the tests they have learnt or worked on during the previous week.

Jacob said:

“My dad is self-employed as a plasterer, and this made me interested in the construction industry and materials testing also involved my love for science.

Being an apprentice has helped me develop and grow as an individual through the exposure of being in a working environment. Working whilst completing my apprenticeship and being able to study, whilst still earning allows me to implement first-hand theoretical knowledge that you are taught in a real-world setting.

To anyone considering an apprenticeship, my advice would be to go for it, and find one that you will enjoy. The knowledge and experience, along with being able to earn money are huge advantages of doing an apprenticeship.”

Elliot said:

“I decided an apprenticeship was the right path for me because I would get valuable work experience and a qualification whilst getting paid.

I enjoy the variation of work that I get involved in, and the fact I am always learning something new. The support from the team is fantastic – and one of the great things about my apprenticeship. They provide me with plenty of advice and support and always encourage further learning and training.”

Ashton shared:

“My aim was to develop my skills and gain the knowledge I needed to succeed in my career, and I saw an apprenticeship as an alternative career path than going to university. An apprenticeship is the perfect opportunity to learn and progress while getting paid.

I would 100% recommend doing an apprenticeship. It is the perfect opportunity to build on your knowledge and learn the key skills needed to succeed in your role and to build your network. CTS give me all the support I need to be successful and complete my apprenticeship”

“At CTS we are serious about professional and personal development.” shared Carolyn Cole, HR Director. “We wanted to ensure we created opportunities to enter the CTS business and grow with us. We loved the idea of bringing onboard apprentices and really helping them develop their career in materials testing. Our business is growing, and we wanted to bring an apprentice scheme in so we could foster talent and help support that growth.”
