Construction Testing Solutions became part of the CET family in May 2016, and since then has been growing rapidly. The joining of the two companies was an easy decision to make. Thanks to our expertise in UKAS-accredited testing services for the construction industry, Construction Testings Solutions’ scope of testing were a perfectly matched with the services CET offered in other areas of the country.
Being located in Doncaster gave us a perfect base in the M1 corridor. However, we also spotted opportunities in the North West. Materials Testing Manager Liam Williams was a key part of the expansion project and explains more about how the Warrington site came about, and what the future holds for the company:
“I have more than 15 years of experience in the testing field, but am a relative newcomer to CTS and CET, having only joined in May. My first – and very busy! – few months were spent between CET, Wolvey and Construction Testing Solutions, Doncaster in a self-directed Business Development role.”
“When you work in an industry for so long, you pick up a lot of contacts – it’s quite a small world, as the saying goes – and so, I found myself winning business from former clients and people I knew in the industry.” Liam Explained. “This led us to look at where competitors were located and we saw a real opportunity in the North West of England; CET’s existing labs already covered the South, the Midlands and Scotland with great geographical reach and Construction Testing Solutions covered the North East” he recalled.
“With these areas covered, it left the North West – and with the majority of our customers being local contractors, they place a lot of importance in working with the specialists on their doorstep; they want us to be able to get to a site quickly and avoid unnecessary delays in test results. So, while our existing labs could physically do the job, we needed to be closer to our target companies.”
Locating the premises was the next job, as Liam explained “We identified this great site in Warrington, made the necessary arrangements and picked up the keys in October. Almost immediately the work began to fully kit out the lab and make it operational.”
It was a phenomenal challenge for Construction Testing Solutions, but highly rewarding too. “Although I’d worked as a lab manager before and had made changes to previous workspaces, I had never built one from an empty shell; it was fantastic to design workflows and spec all the equipment we needed. Then there was the added urgency and timing of our UKAS accreditation on the 8th of December which we needed to be ready for.” he explained, “With that in place, we’re now hard at work on the day job!”
Since the lab opened the company has hired four new technicians that are currently out and about at some of our major developments, including Manchester Airport and Ellesmere Port. While we’re pleased to say that we’ve got a very full workload, we’re committed to our customers and ready to take an emergency call and turnaround a new request within deadlines – just like all of Construction Testing Solutions’ and CET’s labs.
“Our major aims for 2018 are to grow, and to grow fast; we’re targeting councils, quarries, factories, aggregates…and industry that requires bituminous and asphalt testing. I am hopeful that there will be more jobs created and a continuation of working on some really prestigious projects” said Liam, “We know we’re helping to put in place a structurally sound infrastructure in our region and across the UK as part of the wider business, which is definitely something to be proud of.”
